Students will submit:
• calculations, including workings, and drawings to show their achievement of a solution to the assigned
questions
• short written statements throughout the calculations, explaining:

statutory requirements for structural designs
–
safety factors for live loads, dead loads and imposed loads determined in calculations
–
evaluating how bending moments determine steel beam selection
–
analysing support methods and deflection
–
effective support methods based on ease and speed of construction, economics and safety
–
analysing materials for their capacity and resistance to corrosion and weathering
• discussion of pros and cons in selection of structural materials for design and construction of structural
framework for building projects
